I floated on fluffy clouds, but I couldn't see or hear anything. It was like the time I was in a sensory deprivation chamber floating in water at the same temperature as my body. It didn't feel like I was in water this time. I wished I could see at least, but it was so dark, and I was so tired. Maybe this is what death was like. I let the darkness suck me back in again.

* * *

The smell of peppermint seeped into the darkness. Daddy was worried. I always knew when he was having a bad day because he smelled of peppermint. His whole apartment would be permeated with the smell. I loved it. I found it calming just like he did because it reminded me of him and being safe in his arms. I would do anything to be in Daddy's arms.

The darkness got lighter ahead of me. Didn't they always say to stay away from the light, or go toward it? As I got closer to the light, the smell of peppermint got stronger. That was all the indication I needed to keep moving forward. It wasn't easy. I felt heavier and heavier, but if I kept pushing, I'd see him again. I had to see him.

Beeping and far away voices broke the deafening silence. They were almost too loud. I tried to open my eyes, but it felt like they were glued shut. I tried to move my right hand, but something heavy was on it. I tried to move the left, but I couldn't feel it. I started to panic. Did Alon still have me? Was I strapped in the chair again?

The beeping increased, and the weight on my right hand lifted. I jerked my arm flailing out until someone grabbed it. I kicked out. Why wouldn't my left arm move?

"No!" I croaked out. More hands grabbed my feet to hold me down. People were shouting about drugging me again. I fought harder. I didn't want to be drugged.

"Shhhh, baby, stop!" Two warm hands cupped my face. Peppermint engulfed me. "Baby, stop. Open your eyes." Soft lips surrounded by soft hair kissed my lips.

"Daddy?" I whispered.

"Yes, baby, boy. I'm here. You're safe. Open your eyes." His whispered words and smell penetrated my panicked brain. The beeping slowed down. I was so tired suddenly, but I had to see. I had to know.

I opened my eyes and there they were, the eyes I always saw in my dreams. My vision blurred as tears clouded them. "You saved me."

"No, boy. You saved yourself." Oz looked sad, and he lowered his eyes. "I didn't do anything to save you."

"Yes, you did." I tried again to move my hands, but my left still wouldn't move, and my right hand hurt.

"Stop, Connor! Calm down." Oz pulled back and turned my head to the left. My arm was in a cast that went from my hand all the way to my neck and covered part of my chest. A bar from my elbow to my side held my arm in place.
